You Can Practice Belonging Before Believing You Belong
A 20-minute paper presented at the Program for the Evolution of Spirituality’s Belonging conference at Harvard Divinity School on September 25, 2026.
Belonging can be practiced before we believe that we belong. This is one of the central findings from the first six months of The Dreamer Project, a three-year experiment in ordinary life exploring what changes when consciousness is provisionally treated as fundamental.

Belonging Without Faith: A Day-to-Day Experiment in Awakening
A 20-minute paper written for the Program for the Evolution of Spirituality’s Belonging conference at Harvard Divinity School on September 25, 2026.
Revised post-conference abstract.
What happens if, instead of trying to convince myself that we are connected, I begin by practicing as if we already belong? This question did not arrive all at once, but began to take shape during the first six months of a three-year perception experiment. Using a consciousness-first premise that informs my We The Dreamer practice, I developed small eyes-open meditations, field trials, and mind practices intended to shift my perception of myself, others, and the situations I encounter. In about 500 recorded trials, I noted some perceptual movement in approximately 89 percent of cases. Those changes did not necessarily improve my life, transform my existence, or become a potion for everlasting happiness. While some experiences were compelling, they do not prove that the premise is true. Some trials produced null results, and others revealed risks. At times, an exercise made me less responsive to someone else's experience. This first-person record offers an account of what changed and what went wrong. And I am beginning to understand belonging less as something I must experience through membership in a group, or first believe in, and more as something I might practice.

A random What Now assignment asked me to stay home and look at the backyard for twenty minutes. The task did not make the mind peaceful or turn the backyard into a revelation. But it made the mind visible — how quickly attention reaches for irritation, control, memory, comparison, longing, and then, sometimes, availability.
